Haywood Highsmith Aims to Secure Spot on Suns Roster
44 days agoHaywood Highsmith, the latest addition to the Phoenix Suns for the upcoming 2025-2026 season, is working to establish his position on the team after facing challenges during his initial season. Highsmith joined the Suns mid-season, but injuries hampered his performance, limiting him to just seven regular-season games and two playoff appearances.
With the Suns trading away key forwards Grayson Allen and Royce O'Neale, Highsmith finds himself in a reserve role, primarily expected to contribute during garbage time or if injuries strike players ahead of him on the depth chart. He is currently on a non-guaranteed contract that will require him to prove himself during training camp and preseason to secure a permanent spot.
During his time with the Suns, Highsmith's best performance came against the Boston Celtics, where he scored 16 points and made four three-pointers. However, he struggled with consistency, averaging over 15 minutes in only three of his ten games, including playoffs. His role diminished further as Rasheer Fleming emerged as a primary backup forward.
Highsmith, who previously played a vital role in the Miami Heat's surprising playoff runs, is now on a one-year, $3 million deal with the Suns, which becomes fully guaranteed in January 2027. If he makes the roster, he will also be eligible for trade after December 15.
As a player with playoff experience, Highsmith is prepared to step up if called upon, providing the Suns with a gritty defender and floor spacer who can contribute without needing the ball. His journey continues as he aims to make a significant impact this season.
